
Unab Sumbal
Syeda Unab Sumbal is a contemporary Pakistani visual artist and curator, born in Chanab Nagar near Chiniot, Punjab. She developed a passion for art early in life, which led her to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of the Punjab, Lahore, graduating in 2016. During her academic years, she began to develop her distinctive mark-making technique and interest in portraiture.
Artistic Practice
Unab Sumbal’s work focuses on the subtle beauty of everyday life. Drawing inspiration from ordinary people and daily routines, her art reflects emotional depth and quiet observation. She is known for her hyperrealistic renderings of faces combined with vibrant backgrounds using ink and acrylics. Her refined line work and sensitive approach to storytelling through imagery have become defining aspects of her visual style.
Career and Recognition
After graduation, she quickly emerged as a notable presence in the contemporary art scene. Her early exhibitions, including those at Ejaz Art Gallery in Lahore, received critical acclaim. In 2019, she was awarded First Prize in the Arjumand Painting Award by Gallery6, Islamabad, an important national recognition of her work and vision. She was later featured in Gallery6’s landmark 100th exhibition, placing her alongside some leading names in Pakistani contemporary art.
Curatorial Work and Present Role
In addition to her studio practice, Syeda Unab Sumbal currently serves as Assistant Curator at O Art Space Gallery in Lahore. Her curatorial role complements her artistic practice, allowing her to support fellow artists and shape the evolving art scene in Pakistan. Through both her artwork and her curatorial contributions, she continues to play a significant role in enriching the country’s visual culture.
