Mehr un Nisa
Bachelor’s in Fine Arts | B.Ed
Mehr un Nisa is a Karachi-based visual artist whose creative journey began in childhood. While she enjoyed drawing and painting like many children, her true fascination lay in collecting and repurposing domestic waste materials. She transformed these discarded objects into architectural models, decorative pieces, and handmade birthday cards for friends and family. Her work was so well received that her school art teacher recognized her potential early on and encouraged her to pursue formal art education.
Academic Journey and Educational Background
After completing her college education with first division, Mehr un Nisa received full support from her family to follow her passion. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.), laying a solid foundation in both the creative and academic fields. She then joined the Center of Excellence in Art & Design (CEAD), Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro, where she developed a deeper understanding of artistic practice and its broader intellectual and social context.
Artistic Growth and Exploration
At CEAD, Mehr un Nisa immersed herself in diverse artistic experiences, ranging from collage-making with unconventional materials to printmaking on unusual surfaces, live painting sessions, and large-format drawings. These experimental practices allowed her to break through creative boundaries and gain confidence in initiating bold new projects.
Her academic training included a wide array of disciplines such as sculpture, miniature painting, printmaking, screen printing, ceramics, and art history. This exposure to multiple mediums and techniques became one of the most rewarding aspects of her four-year degree, significantly shaping her artistic voice.
Thesis Concept: GARB-AGE
For her thesis, Mehr un Nisa chose a concept that connected deeply to her childhood interests, “GARB-AGE.” The project reflects a critical perspective on the modern age, suggesting that we have transitioned from the Stone Age and Ice Age into what she calls the Garb-Age, an era defined by overconsumption and the ubiquity of waste.
Recognizing garbage as a pressing social issue, she aimed to reframe its meaning by using it as an artistic medium. Through her work, she highlights the visual and conceptual richness of discarded materials in their textures, compositions, and tones and challenges viewers to see beauty in what is typically overlooked. Her project does not just focus on environmental awareness, but also on redefining aesthetics through transformation and reinterpretation.
Mehr un Nisa’s practice is rooted in the belief that art can emerge from the most unexpected sources. From childhood experiments with recycled materials to academic explorations of waste as a medium, her journey reflects a consistent dedication to transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. Through her art, she invites audiences to reconsider their relationship with everyday waste and discover meaning in the forgotten elements of modern life.
