Meher Afroz

Meher Afroz is one of Pakistan's most significant contemporary artists, celebrated for a five-decade practice spanning printmaking, painting, and mixed media. Born in 1948 in Lucknow, India, she moved to Karachi, Pakistan, where she continues to live and work.

Education and Professional Experience

Afroz graduated with Honours in Fine Arts from the Government College of Art and Crafts, Lucknow. She began her teaching career as Lecturer at the Central Institute of Arts and Crafts, Karachi (1975–1990), before joining the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi, as Senior Faculty in the Fine Arts Department (1990–2008), and later as Visiting Faculty, retiring as Professor (2009–2015).

Artistic Themes and Style

Afroz's practice reflects a modernist sensibility rooted in a traditionalist approach to image-making. Her iconography draws from comparative religions, culture, and Urdu language and script, with each layer, mark, and colour deliberately applied to build a chant-like, meditative surface, engaging themes of memory, displacement, spirituality, and social commentary. Notable series include Mask and Puppet (1987), Portrait (1990), Amulet (1994), Hisaar (1996–99), Zindaan (2001), Pindaar (2005), Naqsh Bar Aab (2012), Sabza o Gul (2014), and Aap Beeti (2017–18).

Exhibitions

Afroz has held over twenty solo exhibitions since her 1974 debut, Evolution of Symbols, at Ahmed Parvez Gallery, Karachi, largely at Chawkandi Art Gallery, Karachi, alongside shows at Rohtas Gallery, Nomad Gallery, Khaas Art Gallery, and O Art Space. Her most recent solo show, Imkaan, was held at O Art Space, Lahore, in 2023. She has participated in numerous group, two-person, and international exhibitions across India, the UK, France, the USA, Bangladesh, Jordan, the UAE, Nepal, and Canada, and represented Pakistan at the Karachi Biennale (2017, 2019), the Tashkent Biennale (2009), the Asian Art Biennale, Dhaka (1993, 2006), and the Western Pacific Print Biennale, Melbourne (1976–77, 1978–79), among others.
