
Imran Ullah Hunzai
Imran Ullah Hunzai is a renowned Pakistani visual artist, sculptor, poet, musician, and educator from Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan. His multidisciplinary work bridges traditional and contemporary art forms, often exploring themes of cultural identity, environmental concerns, and collective memory.
Early Life and Education
Born in the picturesque Hunza Valley, Imran was raised in a family of artisans, shepherds, and farmers. His grandfather, Doulat Shah, was a self-taught architect and artisan known for designing and constructing ethnic houses for the local community. This rich cultural heritage deeply influenced Imran's artistic journey. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with distinction in Sculpture from the National College of Arts (NCA), Lahore, in 2006.
Artistic Practice
Imran's work spans sculpture, installation, poetry, and music. He often uses materials like wood, wire, and stone to craft sculptures that depict animals and human forms, symbolizing societal issues. His art delves into social themes such as cultural identity, environmental concerns, and collective memory.
Exhibitions and Projects
Imran has participated in over 60 group exhibitions and held eight solo shows. Notable exhibitions include "Laminated Souls" at O Art Space, Lahore (2017), "An Unromantic Present" at Sanat Initiative, Karachi (2016), and "Aboriginal Souls" at O Art Space (2022). He also curated two digital exhibitions—"The Green" and "The Colors of North" at the Gilgit-Baltistan Pavilion during Dubai Expo 2022, showcasing the region’s cultural and environmental narratives.
Teaching and Mentorship
From 2007 to 2021, Imran taught at both the National College of Arts and the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), mentoring emerging artists in Pakistan.
Awards and Recognitions
Imran has received several prestigious awards, including the Sadequain Pride of Performance Award in 2021, making him the first artist from Gilgit-Baltistan to receive this honor. He also won the Public Choice Award at the Karachi Biennale in 2019 and participated in the ART NEXUS Residency in Tokyo, Japan, in 2016.
