Asif Ahmed

Asif Ahmed (b. 1980, Karachi) is a Pakistani contemporary artist recognised for his accomplished miniature paintings. He graduated from the National College of Arts (NCA), Lahore, in 2004 with a BFA, First Division with Distinction in Miniature Painting. He received the Ustad Haji Sharif Award for Best Miniature Artist from his graduating batch. His thesis exhibition, *Banjara Nama* (2004), marked an early milestone in his career.

Artistic Practice

Working primarily in gouache on *wasli* (traditional handmade paper), Ahmed draws on Mughal and Deccani miniature traditions to examine political, historical and social realities. His practice addresses colonial history, cultural identity, political power and the evolving place of traditional art in contemporary society.

Through the layering of historical imagery, archival photographs and traditional miniature motifs, Ahmed challenges established interpretations of the miniature tradition while retaining its technical precision and compositional discipline.

Selected Works

His *Tension and Tradition* series explores colonial violence through miniature painting and archival photographs of Mughal princes Mirza Jawan Bakht and Mirza Shah Abbas, who were murdered by the British following the 1857 uprising. Works such as *Bygone Memories* and *All Is Fair in War and Love* bring historical narratives into contemporary focus, examining the relationship between cultural heritage, power and collective memory.
