Aqeel Solangi

Aqeel Solangi is a prominent Pakistani visual artist and educator, known for his introspective explorations of memory, nature, and the passage of time through a surrealist and often symbolic visual language.

Born in Ranipur, Sindh, Solangi’s artistic roots go back to his early work as a sign and cinema board painter at Mehboob Painters in Khairpur (Mir’s), and later, through foundational training with renowned artist Mussarat Mirza in Sukkur.

He graduated with honors from the National College of Arts (NCA), Lahore in 2003 with a major in Painting, followed by an MA (Hons.) in Visual Art in 2005. He later earned a second master’s degree, an MA Fine Art (Pass with Merit) from Bath Spa University, UK in 2016. In 2006, he was awarded the Charles Wallace Pakistan Trust Visiting Artist Fellowship to the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts in London.

Since 2006, Solangi has been associated with the National College of Arts, Rawalpindi, where he currently serves as Associate Professor and Head of the Painting and Sculpture departments. Alongside his academic role, he maintains a dedicated studio practice in Rawalpindi.

His artwork has been widely exhibited both in Pakistan and internationally, including participation in the 2013 Pakistani Artists’ Workshop in China. In 2019, a major survey of his work was presented at Chawkandi Art, accompanied by the publication "Fictional Homelands."

Solangi’s work has garnered critical acclaim from prominent voices such as Dr. Michele Whiting, Dr. Akbar Naqvi, Aasim Akhtar, Marjorie Husain, Nafisa Rizvi, Salwat Ali, Noor Jehan Mecklai, and Sally Bennett. Among his accolades is the 'A Vision of the Future – 2006' Young Artists Award by the Lahore Arts Council.

He continues to live and work in Rawalpindi, shaping future generations of artists while contributing to Pakistan’s contemporary art scene.
