Education and Academic Career
Ali Abbas Syed pursued his formal education in fine arts at the University of Sindh, Jamshoro, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in 1990 and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in 1993. He began his teaching career in 1992 at his alma mater, serving for a decade. He has also taught at the Central Institute of Arts and Crafts in Karachi and the Department of Architecture at Mehran University. Currently, he holds the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Fine Arts at the Centre of Excellence in Art & Design, Mehran University, Jamshoro.
Artistic Vision and Style
Abbas is renowned for his evocative watercolor paintings that capture the essence of Sindh's Thar Desert and its Sufi traditions. His work portrays the lives of nomadic tribes, Sufi mystics, and the spiritual gatherings known as Urs, reflecting a deep connection to the region's cultural and spiritual heritage.
Awards and Recognition
Abbas's exceptional contributions to the arts have been recognized both nationally and internationally. He has been honored with the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz, Pakistan's civil award for excellence in the field of art. Additionally, he received a Gold Medal at the 3rd International Watercolor Biennale in 2014 in Caudete, Spain, and the Watercolor Master Award from the United Kingdom.
Curatorial Work and Publications
In 2016 and 2018, Abbas curated Pakistan's first International Watercolor Biennale, titled "Pearls of Peace," held at the Centre of Excellence in Art & Design, Mehran University. He has also authored thirteen books on watercolor painting, contributing significantly to the education and promotion of watercolor art.
