Ahsan Jamal
Ahsan Jamal (b. 1975) received his BFA in Miniature Painting from the National College of Arts, Lahore, in 2003. His contemplative studio practice examines portraiture within the tradition of Indo-Persian miniature painting. Through continuous experimentation with materials and techniques, Jamal has developed a distinctive visual language in which human figures appear suspended in dream-like, introspective spaces.
His work reflects on the enduring traces of civil wars, partitions, and geographical divides, exploring how social, religious, and political conflicts shape ordinary lives and notions of nationhood. Jamal’s practice surveys both the similarities and differences among people living across fractured histories and contested identities.
He has held eight solo exhibitions and participated in numerous curated group exhibitions at prominent museums and galleries in Pakistan and internationally, including the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan; Lawrie Shabibi, Dubai; British Council, London; Cartwright Hall, Bradford; HNTB Gallery, Washington, DC; Queen’s Palace, Bagh-e-Babur, Kabul; Aicon Gallery, New York; Galleria Gomiero, Milan; Mohatta Palace Museum, Karachi; and the National Museum of Art, Islamabad. He has also exhibited at major art fairs such as Art Paris, Brussels Oriental Art Fair, and Asia Now, Paris.
Jamal has taught and conducted workshops on miniature painting at various art institutions across Pakistan. He lives and works in Lahore.
