
Abbas Kamangar
Abbas Kamangar was born in 1958 in Karachi, Pakistan, into a family with an artistic legacy spanning over 250 years. His ancestors served as commissioned artists in the royal courts of Kutch and Morbi in Gujarat, India, and later in Sindh, Pakistan. This rich heritage laid the foundation for his lifelong dedication to the visual arts.
Artistic Training and Mentorship
Kamangar began his artistic journey at the age of eight, learning under the guidance of his father, Yousuf Kamangar, and cousin, Qasim Kamangar. Over 14 years, he developed his skills in figurative, landscape, and floral painting, mastering traditional techniques and forms.
Professional Career
Kamangar launched his professional art career in 1996. Since then, he has participated in 39 national and international group exhibitions. His work has been exhibited across Pakistan in cities such as Lahore, Islamabad, Bahawalpur, and Multan, as well as internationally in Izmir, Turkey.
He is noted for being the first Pakistani artist to complete a plein air painting tour of five Pakistani cities: Multan, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad, Lahore, and Peshawar.
Artistic Themes and Style
Sufism is a central theme in Kamangar’s work, a subject he has explored extensively since 1996. His watercolor series depicting dervishes (Malangs) captures their spiritual energy, colorful attire, and dynamic movements. These works reflect his deep spiritual connection and his desire to preserve and celebrate aspects of cultural heritage often overlooked.
