A. Q Arif

Abdul Qudoos Arif, professionally known as A. Q. Arif, was born on February 28, 1975, in Karachi, Pakistan, into a family with strong literary traditions his mother was a writer. From a young age, he demonstrated a passion for drawing and painting, which was nurtured by his family. He pursued his artistic education at the Karachi School of Art, graduating in 1996 with a four-year professional diploma in fine arts, earning distinction in his final year.

A. Q. Arif’s work engages viewers on an emotional and intuitive level, often rooted in quiet expression and deep introspection. His signature style includes soft, muted colour palettes that evoke stillness, serenity, and emotional depth. Through the use of subtle tones, his art offers a calming presence, allowing emotions to emerge gradually and resonate with quiet strength.

Arif frequently places solitary figures within vast landscapes, introducing narrative elements that suggest contemplation and solitude. He draws inspiration from Mughal architecture such as domes, arches, and minarets, integrating historical and cultural references that lend a timeless and meditative quality to his work.

Exhibitions & Teaching Career
Since 1998, Arif has held over 23 solo exhibitions in cities including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, and Dubai. His work has also been showcased in numerous group exhibitions internationally, across the United States, Italy, Singapore, India, and the United Arab Emirates.

In addition to his studio practice, Arif has played a significant role in arts education. He has taught and conducted workshops at various institutions such as the Karachi School of Art, Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Textile Institute of Pakistan, and Iqra University, mentoring a new generation of Pakistani artists.

Awards & Recognition
A. Q. Arif has received several accolades throughout his career. Notable among these are the International Best Artist Award from Trevisan Art Gallery in Italy, and the Best Artist award at the 3rd International Watercolour Biennale in Pakistan. His work has also been auctioned at Bonhams in London. In recognition of his contributions to the arts, he was honoured with the Sitar-e-Imtiaz (Pride of Performance) by the Government of Pakistan in 2020–21. He is also affiliated with international art bodies, including the American Impressionist Society and the Watercolour Art Society in Houston, where he currently resides.
