Review by Arjumand Faisel – Hamza Qazi’s fascinating “Republic” engages to delve in visual dialogue.
Hamza Qazi’s painting, entitled Republic, serves as a canvas for diverse interpretations. It is cleverly shaped to resemble a flag covered in green velvet satin, a choice that captivated not just me but also the majority of visitors at the APA 2023 exhibition. This distinct visual, coupled with its title, stirred a sense of intrigue and offered a compelling visual narrative.
The artist’s decision to cloak the flag in green velvet satin invites various readings. It may be perceived as a commentary, suggesting that there are layers of national identity that remain unseen or require closer scrutiny. Alternatively, this choice could symbolize entrenched national practices of concealing truths or employing obscured measures to shield them from the public eye with materials of grandeur.
Despite being a republic—a system where power ideally rests with the people—the painting hints at the existence of veiled elements within the country’s governance. The title, Republic, seems to carry a deeper meaning, possibly echoing the artist’s critique of the nation’s status, its political system, the concealment of foundational principles, or the suppression of societal values associated with a republic. However, as with all forms of art, interpretation remains subjective, and Hamza’s precise intentions might not be explicitly evident.
Until the metaphorical veil covering the flag is lifted, this unconventional yet artistically poignant presentation will continue to invite diverse interpretations. It encourages viewers to actively engage with the artwork, prompting them to reflect on their own perceptions and understandings—an invitation to explore the beauty of visual dialogue.
In essence, Republic transcends mere visual representation; it serves as a catalyst for introspection, encouraging viewers to question, reflect, and participate in the discourse surrounding the multifaceted layers of national identity, governance, and societal values.
