Nurayah Sheikh Nabi

​Nurayah Sheikh Nabi is a distinguished Pakistani visual artist and educator, renowned for her expertise in printmaking. Born in Rawalpindi in 1971, she has significantly contributed to the Pakistani art scene through her artistic practice, educational roles, and community engagement.​

Early Life and Education
Nurayah pursued her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Printmaking and Sculpture at the National College of Arts (NCA), Lahore, graduating with distinction in 1993. Demonstrating a commitment to lifelong learning, she later obtained a Master’s degree in Art Education from Beaconhouse National University (BNU), Lahore, in 2020, earning a gold medal and maintaining a CGPA of 3.95.

Academic Career
With over 18 years of teaching experience, Nurayah has played a pivotal role in art education in Pakistan. She currently serves as an Associate Professor and the Head of the Foundation Programme at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture (IVS) in Karachi. In this capacity, she teaches drawing in the foundation program and printmaking in the Fine Art department. Her pedagogical approach is deeply informed by her personal artistic practice, emphasizing an intensive study of materials and techniques associated with printmaking.​

Artistic Practice
Nurayah's artistic oeuvre is characterized by a focus on printmaking, though she has explored multiple mediums throughout her career. Her work often delves into themes of womanhood and nature, reflecting a nuanced understanding of these subjects. She has exhibited her work both nationally and internationally, with notable exhibitions at the DECK Gallery in Singapore (2015), the Sharjah Museum (2015), and participation in the Imago Mundi project at the Venice Biennale (2017).

Curatorial Projects
Beyond her personal artistic endeavors, Nurayah has curated several exhibitions, providing platforms for emerging and established artists. Notable among these are 'Collective Cohesion' at Koel Gallery in 2020, which showcased works of recent graduates from IVS, and 'Signature' at O Art Space in Lahore, featuring trademark works from established Pakistani artists

Awards and Recognition
Nurayah's dedication to both her craft and community has earned her several accolades, including the Distinguished Teacher Award at IVS in 2019 and multiple academic honors during her postgraduate studies.
