Zulfiqar Ali Zulfi was born in Dera Ghazi Khan. He is a Design graduate from the National College of Arts, and is now one of the most famous painters of Pakistan. He paints the landscapes of Punjab countryside and is known for his remarkable use of light in his work.
Thanks to his amazing skill and attention to detail, Zulfiqar Ali Zufli has participated in a number of exhibitions here in Pakistan as well as abroad. The quality of his work can truly be appreciated by the fact that his paintings are part of various permanent collections, including those at the Governor House, Punjab Assembly, American Consulate, National Art Gallery of Islamabad, and the President House in Turkey, to name a few.
Zulfiqar’s love for nature started from an early age, when he would sit and observe how nature worked. He would notice how the mist is washed away from the warmth of the sun or the winter rain. This is how he fell in love with nature and started to paint light.
The way the artist captures the scenery is unmatched. Seeing his work, you can see a presence of normally unseen elements like the wind in the sky, the mist cloaking the sunlight and the light pouring through it. He also plays with the orange winter sun in his paintings, creating a very cohesive and life-like atmosphere on a canvas. His compositions are never overpowering or cluttered; he remedies this by adding the sky in this landscapes, allowing for a good amount of breathing space for the viewer.
Zulfiqar’s skies are also an indication of the season and the time. In some paintings, the sky is full of mist while in others it is a plethora of colors all merging into one another softly and effortlessly. This makes it very easy for the viewer to decide whether it is a winter scene or a summer; dawn or dusk; night or day. Another interesting aspect of his landscapes is the utter absence of animal or human life. You cannot see the presence of any signs of modern technology like wires or poles either. For Zulfiqar, it is all about the beauty and presence of nature and its colors.
This realistic approach of Zulfiqar’s turns simple landscape paintings into windows through which one can actually see and almost feel the weather. One can feel the winter mornings to be cold and the summer sun to be warm and brilliant. This feat is not easy to achieve, but Zulfiqar Ali Zulfi does it ever so beautifully. This is the reason that the artist has won the President’s Pride of Performance award, and has been part of group and solo shows all around the world.
