Hassan Amekan is an Iranian born artist and illustrator. He now lives in Tehran, and has been working for fifteen years as a painter and illustrator for books in various languages. Hassan has illustrated books in various countries, including France, India, Japan, Korea, Spain, UK, and the USA.
One of the most famous series of Hassan’s paintings are those based on the Shahnameh. This is a Persian epic written by the famous poet Ferdousi, between 977 and 1010 AD. This is the national epic of Greater Iran, and showcases the mythical and somewhat historical past of the Persian Empire ever since the creation of the world till the Islamic conquest of Persia. The artists has created his paintings by simplifying the imagery. The use of colors and backdrops in his paintings have led to a different interpretation of the classical style.
Hassan has won various national as well as international awards for his book illustrations. Other than this, he also practices painting and has held successful solo shoes in Bahrain, Italy and Iran. He has also been part of many group exhibitions held in France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Slovakia, and South Korea.
This kind of success and acclaim can only come when the artist is dedicated to his work and has an individual style, and Hassan has both those traits. He works by using simple images in the books to create interesting and visually stimulating compositions that get the required idea or message across very elegantly. He mostly uses somber tones such as brown or rust for the backdrops of his illustrations, with the subjects taking over the foreground in greyscale. This creates a very distinct difference between the foreground and the background, leading to clear and concise imagery that not everyone can match so easily.
