Fariya Zaeem's artistic journey began as an eleven year old, painting still life and nature in oil and watercolours. Her style of art evolved over time, as she moved through the various phases of her life. From representational art in her academic years to more illustrative styles during her career in the advertising industry over a period of eleven years.
Fariya, a modern expressionist, currently works at Soneri Bank as the Head of Marketing. She works with a bold approach to art, using gestural elegance and spontaneous strokes to create visuals that are vibrant in hues and have a textural depth. Her work revolves around the transportation of viewers into a visual landscape. By experimenting with numerous mediums and managing to achieve “serendipitous” moments on her substrate, she turns something ordinary into something unexpected.
The artist has recently started using acrylics along with watercolors to add a contrasting layer to her work. She juxtaposes these two opposites to achieve a play of transparency and opaqueness in her work, along with the introduction of certain paradoxes and contradictions. She has also introduced pastels in her work as they blend well with the softness of watercolors and acrylics to create further depth in her works. Watercolors are her preferred medium as she enjoys the translucent effect they bring to the substrate.
Having practiced painting both Still Life and Nature since her childhood, Fariya Zaeem is very well-known for exploring the various techniques associated with watercolors. These include wet-on-wet, dry-on-wet, bubble-wrap, shrink-wrap, and salt technique, as well as different brush strokes and bleeding effects.
Fariya Zaeem also likes working on large scale sheets and experiences a sense of freedom and expansion on a wide substrate, where the imagery organically unfolds and all painting gestures are synchronized. She has explored expressions in diptych and triptych templates too.
