In 1992, Babri masjid in India was attacked, as a consequence of which multiple mandirs were demolished by angry mobs on this side of the border. Very few stood the test of time and society to tell their tale, this is a painting of the inside of such a temple. The entire neighborhood came together to protect the structure and the residents within, they proved that communal efforts can make the impossible possible.
The temple has given shade to a Muslim family since partition, high magnitude earthquakes have weakened the structure and the possibility of eviction lingers above their head but the refuse to budge. How a public space has been domesticized is what interests me.
